GU CLINIC
Mater Dei Hospital

Malta Genitourinary Report 2007

The Genitourinary (GU) clinic has been up and running since January 2000, giving the general public the opportunity to be seen by a consultant specialized in sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Sexually transmitted infections are not uncommon. For a population of 400,000 the world health organisation estimates 15,000 new cases a year. Infections, including HIV, can be present even if one feels completely well.

The GU clinic follows the British model as closely as possible but, in keeping with the European tradition of dermato-venereology, it forms part of the Department of Dermatology. The GU clinic itself is situated at Mater Dei Hospital on the second floor of the outpatient department, while the Department of Dermatology is still located at Sir Paul Boffa Hospital in Floriana.

The GU clinic provides mainly an out-patient service. Appointments are scheduled so that patients are seen on time. Urgent cases are seen that day or the next day at the latest. These include:

• Urethral discharge in males
• Genital ulcer disease in both sexes
• Suspected STIs in pregnant women
• Girls under 16 years.

Patients are seen every day from 7.30 am to 1 pm, excluding Sundays and public holidays. The waiting list for routine appointments is around two weeks. There is a 24 hour appointment system by answering machine. The service is free to all local and foreign attendees alike, and totally confidential. Confidentiality is ensured by means of a code number system. Hardcopies of all records are kept under lock and key at all times.

Anonymous HIV testing is an integral part of our service. We also offer prophylactic Hepatitis B vaccines for free to all men who have sex with men.
